I've been using Goodreads for years. It's been my primary way to track and remember what I've read. Today, I discovered that they delete reviews. Well, to be more precise, I think they deleted a book I entered into their system in favour of another entry of the same book. But that means not only has my review disappeared, but also any record of me having finished the book.

If you, like me, use their website to remember shit, this is very bad. This morning, I was half convinced I hadn't in fact read that book. I had to actually get my damn Kindle and check to be sure! It occurred to me that maybe this isn't stuff I should be storing on other people's computers – also known as The Cloud™.

All I Know is on the Internet

As a consequence, I've decided to write book reviews right here on this blog, going forward. I'll try and backfill my old reviews when I get the time. I've also created a reading list page to track what I'm reading and what I've already read. That's obviously a work in progress, but I think it's worth it. I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with Silicon Valley web services and convinced, that I should run my own stuff whenever possible. This is another step in that direction.
