Lara is back on the big screen!

I went and saw the new Tomb Raider movie on Monday to write my review for heise online which just went up. Keep in mind that I’ve been a Lara Croft fanboy since ‘96 and also hugely enjoyed Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider, but I really enjoyed it a lot.

Yeah, it’s a bit dumb and illogical in places, but it’s also a really good, old-fashioned action flick. And it’s a barrel of fun! Basically exactly what you expect from a Tomb Raider movie.

I was initially really sad that they didn’t cast Camilla Luddington in the lead role, who did an excellent job in the games. But I might have to retract that now, because Alicia Vikander is amazing in the role. I also love all the little (and big) nods to the game. It’s amazing how close they came with the costume: Vikander looks so much like the Lara from the 2013 game. Looking at her, she just feels right in the role. The moments when she picks up the ice axe and later the pistols just feel so good.

As far as I’m concerned, they took excatly the right bits from the game and changed just enough to make it a really good film adaptation. Walton Goggins1 is exceptional as Mathias.

If you like Tomb Raider or just good, old-school action movies, you should definitely go see it.
